Speaking to reporters on his plane on Monday night, Trump said: “I think if he runs he could get hurt really badly. I think the base wouldn’t like that – I don’t think it would be good. for the party.

The former US president also warned that he would tell reporters “things” about the governor of Florida “that will not be very flattering”.

Trump is expected to announce his third run for the Republican presidential nomination later this month, looking to piggyback on predicted Republican success in Tuesday’s midterm elections. At a pre-term rally in Ohio on Monday, he indicated an announcement could be made in Florida on Nov. 15.

DeSantis has become Trump’s strongest rival in Republican circles, ruling his state with right-wing policies popular with the party’s Trumpist base.

DeSantis was re-elected governor of Florida on Tuesday and has at times awkwardly avoided questions about his presidential ambitions, but it was also reported that he plans to wait until 2028 when, if Trump wins in 2024, he will be constitutionally barred from show up again. .

Trump attacked DeSantis last week, calling him “Ron DeSanctimonious” during remarks at a rally in Pennsylvania. He discussed the governor again on his plane Monday night.

Trump called DeSantis a “good guy” and said they had no “tiff”, but also said he was “very high in the polls”.

Trump dominates polls for notional nominees in 2024, but DeSantis is clearly his strongest rival and an undisputed winner in polls that take Trump out of the equation.

Trump continued, “If he showed up, I’ll tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anyone other than maybe his wife, who really runs his campaign.

“It’s all not good – you have other people who might come forward I guess. I don’t know if he runs. If he runs, he runs.

In posts seen by the Guardian, a Trump campaign insider said Trump was “going to attack” his rival and said it was “very true” that Republican supporters would not like the idea that the wife of DeSantis, Casey DeSantis, ran his campaign.

Later Tuesday, Trump briefly strolled through the ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago compound, the election night venue, and appeared to admonish DeSantis again.

“I’m not sure he wants to run,” Trump said.

Trump remained coy about who he might choose as his running mate when he announced his 2024 run. “Oh, I’ll let you know real soon,” he said.

One of Trump’s lawyers also warned DeSantis not to show up. Speaking to Right Side Broadcasting Network, Alina Habba said, “He has to stay in Florida. Just stay where you are. You are doing a great job in Florida.

In Florida on Tuesday, Trump told reporters he voted for DeSantis.
