Surprisingly optimistic Eddie Jones said he felt England played well at Twickenham on Sunday but paid a heavy price for a series of mistakes and poor decisions as Argentina secured a victory notable 30-29.

Few among the 80,000 soggy spectators are likely to have left in such a positive frame of mind after England struggled to turn dominating possession into clear chances, despite scoring fine tries in each half thanks to Joe Cokanasiga and Jack van Poortvliet.

Hit hard by 10 penalties – six of which Emiliano Boffelli turned into points, as he also scored a try and notched a conversion – England were never able to really get the upper hand despite leading 16-12 at halftime.

“It was a frustrating game. We played very well, but we made some elementary mistakes and individual mistakes that made them come back into the game,” Jones said.

“We did enough good things but we made mistakes and sometimes mistakes come from trying too hard. We have to tidy up a bit but we made enough line breaks to win maybe two games.”

Jones said he thinks referees have an increasing influence on games, with “most moves ending in a penalty” and the result is players trying to do too much, too soon when in possession.

“It was a stop-start game but there aren’t really any big structural issues with our game,” he said. “I think if we play this game 100 times, the result will not be the same.

“I feel like the team came out and played the way they wanted to play. But even if we made stupid mistakes, we can change those things quite easily. I’m not sitting here thinking we’ve very big problems – for the most part we dominated the game.”
